Wallpaper Change is my current project. This program can change your desktop wallpaper under Windows 9x-NT-2k. It is a free software written in C/C++ with Visual C++ 6.0

Wallpaper Change supports BMP and JPEG images thanks to the Libjpeg v6 that I simplified very much to only convert JPEG to BMP. A sample program JPEG2BMP will be soon available on this site. It took me very long time to find a free converting program such as this one, so I am very happy to let you have it freely very soon with the entire source code !

Install Instructions

First, download the latest version of Wallpaper Change from this site. Currently there is NO graphical interface for installation nor for the program. I think it is not necessary and it will come later.

  • Unzipp the archive in whatever directory
  • Then put any images with the extensions *.jpg and/or *.bmp into that directory and double click the program's executable : it will search for images in its working directory, sort them alphabetically and choose the next to set as your wallpaper
  • It will create a file called "wall.ini" representing the current wallpaper. Each time you launch the program, this file is read to determine which is the next file to choose
  • Don't be afraid to delete this file : Wallpaper Change will recreate it if it doesn't exist or modify it if the file specified is not valid.
  • To change your wallpaper at each startup, create a shortcut in your startup folder and let's have fun !

    This program is free software. It is provided to be used by anybody but without any warranty. The source code is available but cannot be used to produce non-free software. It contains parts of the Libjpeg v6 which is also free software.


    News
    I made a major update to this program recently and jumped directly to version 2. Indeed, the program now supports entirely JPEG images and doesn't call anymore the external converter djpeg.exe. So JPEG routines taken from the Libjpeg have been inserted in the code and the program runs faster than before !

    A lot of work still have to be done to clean up the Libjpeg functions because they do more than the program need. I am also thinking about the possiblity to scale or center the image. Contributions and ideas are also welcomed !
